Fresh-r and BRITT+1 (Interduct Group, TNO, Bam Energy Systems, Brink Climate Systems, Renson and 5plus1) won Mitros' 100%GZND living Challenge with their innovative solutions for healthy living. Together, we will now work on a prototype house, to demonstrate that our design really does create homes without draughts, mould and excess moisture. Meanwhile, Mitros continues to drive innovation: a new challenge was already announced during the finals, this time on sustainability.

Fresh-r developed a smart ventilation system that can be widely installed in a facade in just one day. Interduct's idea BRITT+1, which finished second, is that of a ventilation system which mixes air above the internal doors. GEMI's "healthy living coach" (Huygen Installation Consultants, BBA Indoor Environment and BIOC7 Architects) and "simple healthy ventilation" (Trebbe Bouw, Van der Sluis, BUVA, Tilmar, Heering) finished in joint third place.

Jury chair Marjet Rutten was impressed by the all the finalists' designs: "Mitros was specifically looking for an integrated solution that can be implemented in a relatively short period of time and that also is designed to be simple for users. All four ideas met this challenge in their own way. It is great to see how the different parties sought collaboration with partners including some from outside the industry, such as psychologists, anthropologists and automation experts."

Edward Hissink of winner Fresh-r is also enthusiastic about the collaboration stimulated by the challenge: "The biggest win from participating is the rock-solid collaboration it has created! We and all the other parties involved succeeded in meeting the aspects demanded by the Mitros 100%GZNDwonen Challenge. On our own, we would never have managed that. I believe the fact that it could all be installed in a single day was the deciding factor for the jury of experts. With our solution, tenants therefore suffer very little inconvenience and obtain healthy air quality and a pleasant indoor climate!"

Reason for the challenge

As the largest social landlord in Utrecht and Nieuwegein, Mitros maintains and renovates some 800 homes every year. While this has led to major improvements in areas such as insulation, other issues such as cold draughts and noise nuisance from ventilation systems persist as a common problem even after renovation. The reason for the challenge was to work with the market to come up with some specific innovations that will eventually lead to homes without draughts, mould and excessive moisture.

Innovation at Mitros

Mitros is constantly looking for specific innovations that can help with its core tasks and its ambition to put the tenant first in everything it does. This includes improving collaboration between the parties involved in implementing our projects. This is why Mitros started ExpeditieDoorbraak (ExpeditionBreakthrough) in 2016: a programme to achieve breakthroughs in the renovation process, using the knowledge and experience of market players and non-profit stakeholders. With ExpeditieDoorbraak, Mitros aims to come up with new and innovative designs that will enable the corporation to renovate smarter, faster and more sustainably with the least possible inconvenience to tenants.
