The importance of good ventilation after home insulation
Why ventilation is often mandatory during renovation
When renovating existing homes or buildings, there is often no ventilation system in place, or the existing system is outdated and not demand-driven. Natural ventilation is often used, whereby clean air enters through gaps and cracks. But if you insulate thoroughly, the indoor climate changes significantly. The home or building becomes virtually airtight, reducing the supply of fresh air and the extraction of stale air. For this reason, installing a modern, demand-driven ventilation system in residential buildings is very important and is prescribed in the Environment Buildings Decree (Bbl). Good ventilation keeps the indoor climate healthy and comfortable.
What requirements must you meet?
These ventilation requirements apply to renovations
The Environment Buildings Decree (Bbl) specifies exactly which ventilation requirements apply to renovations. Interduct is happy to help you find a suitable solution. During renovation, sufficient fresh air must be supplied and stale air must be removed. For existing buildings, the following values are usually assumed:
Supply to living space (including living room and bedroom): minimum 0.7 dm³/s per m²
Extraction of living space (e.g., via overflow under doors): minimum 7 dm³/s
Extraction of wet areas (kitchen, bathroom, toilet): fixed minimum extraction rates, or higher to remain in balance with the required supply in living areas.
Please note: these are values for existing buildings and are therefore lower than the 2021 standard for new buildings.
In all cases, it is important that the supply and extraction of air are balanced. This can be achieved in various ways: from a combination of extraction via mechanical ventilation (MV unit) and natural supply via window grilles, to heat-recovery systems that reuse the heat from the indoor air. This way, the air is refreshed and energy is conserved. Would you like to know which ventilation requirements apply to your renovation project or which solution is most suitable? Our approach
Installing ventilation during renovation is often a large, complex job. You often have to deal with limited space, outdated structures, or even heritage requirements. That is why preparation is extremely important. We carefully inspect the building and assess the possibilities. Based on this, you will receive well-considered advice and a suitable design.
Do you agree with our proposal? Then we prepare the project thoroughly: from purchasing to planning. Especially when renovating, it is important that everything is well coordinated. We take residents into account as much as possible and try to limit any inconvenience. We also coordinate our schedule with that of any other parties involved, so that the renovation runs smoothly.
Has the ventilation system been installed, extensively tested, and delivered? It immediately creates a sustainable, healthy, and comfortable indoor climate. To maintain these systems, we offer maintenance contracts. This ensures that the ventilation system continues to function optimally, both now and in the future.
Frequently asked questions
Which ventilation systems are suitable for renovation?
In principle, all kinds of ventilation systems are possible for renovation projects. The most important thing is that the ventilation system fits within the current construction. Sometimes a combination of multiple ventilation systems is required. In short: every situation requires a bespoke solution. Feel free to call on us to partner with you in this.
What does it cost to install or replace ventilation during renovation?
The costs for installing a ventilation system vary depending on the situation. After all, it is always bespoke work, because every building is unique. And when it comes to renovation, there’s even more to consider: the possibilities are often limited due to the existing architectural structures. Curious about the costs of ventilation for your renovation project? We would be happy to visit you to analyse the situation: from the size of the building to relevant environmental factors. Once we have a clear picture of everything, we will create a design and send you a cost estimate. Interested? Then don’t hesitate to contact us.
