Eliminate health risks

Why is ventilation essential for apartment buildings?

The high level of occupancy in apartments raises the humidity and CO2 levels, which can lead to health risks and unnecessary maintenance costs. The right mechanical ventilation system can prevent this from happening. With efficient extraction of used air and a constant supply of fresh air, the residents and users of an apartment building will enjoy a sustainable, healthy and comfortable indoor climate. Mechanical ventilation also meets the ventilation requirements in the Building Regulations.

Lack of space and excess noise

Challenges and solutions for apartment buildings

In an apartment building, space is often limited and noise can be a challenge. But it still pays to invest in mechanical ventilation. Today, there are plenty of modern, compact and quiet ventilation systems that are eminently suitable for use in apartment buildings. Their installation, however, requires expertise. Interduct will be happy to help you to find a suitable and smart ventilation solution. Are you working on an existing building? Our RenovAir and VentKlima subsidiaries provide expert installation with minimal disruption to the residents.

A range of solutions

Types of ventilation systems for apartment buildings

There are basically two different ways to bring fresh air into apartments and other buildings: using natural ventilation, such as opening a window, and using mechanical ventilation. These forms of ventilation are substantially different. Only mechanical ventilation can ensure a supply of healthy indoor air at all times, in all seasons and in all situations. Common choices for apartment buildings are either balanced ventilation with heat recovery (HRV) or mechanical extraction combined with a natural air supply.

FAQs

How does mechanical ventilation work in an apartment block?

The core extraction in an apartment building often consists of a number of different systems. This is due to the different kinds of spaces that exist, such as apartments, and public areas such as a stairwell or a storage room. Due their different sizes and functions, their ventilation needs differ, but one aspect remains constant: mechanical ventilation removes polluted air and provides a constant flow of fresh air.

What types of mechanical ventilation systems are suitable for apartment buildings?

Common choices for apartment buildings are either balanced ventilation with heat recovery (HRV) or mechanical extraction combined with a natural air supply. In contrast, in high traffic areas we usually recommend an installation that works the other way round: clean air is supplied mechanically and removed (naturally) via grilles. Sometimes, however, another form of ventilation may be more appropriate. Interduct will be happy to help you find a suitable ventilation solution.

How does mechanical ventilation contribute to saving energy?

By choosing mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, the cold incoming air is heated by the warm exhaust air. Smart sensors also ensure a constant and controlled airflow, avoiding fluctuations in temperature. This leads to lower energy consumption as well as a pleasant indoor climate.

Is mechanical ventilation mandatory in new apartment buildings?

When building an apartment or apartment building you must comply with the (ventilation) requirements of the Building Regulations (now the Structures (Living Environment) Decree (Bbl)) and the NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Buildings) rules. Insulation plays a crucial role here. Airtight construction minimises energy loss but makes natural ventilation almost impossible. Mechanical ventilation is therefore indispensable and in fact often the only solution that works reliably.

How long will a mechanical ventilation system last?

The average useful life of a mechanical ventilation system is 15 to 25 years, depending on the type of system, its quality and maintenance. Intensive use and highly polluted environments will accelerate wear and tear. Regular maintenance slows down this process, improves the ventilation system's functioning and extends its lifetime.
