Living with a
touch of utility

VERTICAL project
Amsterdam Sloterdijk may be known currently as a business district; that reputation will gradually fade into the background over the next few years. This emerging green urban district offers more and more space for living, shopping and walking, among other things, with VERTICAL being one of the earliest (large) new construction and transformation projects. The three centrally located residential towers (West, East and Center) offer plenty of space for housing, working and sustainable innovations. A place where a healthy indoor climate must be part of the plan. To install the ventilation in the largest tower, VERTICAL East, Dubo Techniek sought out a reliable ventilation partner who was familiar with complicated (bespoke) ventilation technology. That meant VentKlima.

Vertical living in the neighbourhood of the future
Four main shafts run the height the 23-storey residential tower and are connected to two air treatment units on the top floor. The larger one regulates the indoor climate of the 112 flats and communal areas and the smaller one is connected to the stairwell and basement (-2). Both units are pre-programmed, meaning that the air intake and extraction is controlled automatically. This is done using variable volume regulators (VAVs). These sensors measure the occupancy level and adjust the air intake and extraction to match it, thereby reducing energy consumption. Only the car park (-1) is not connected to the central ventilation system, for safety reasons. Here, we used thrust fans, blowing air out through a grille using a separate ventilation unit. In this way, we provided a suitable ventilation solution for each floor.

The power of collaboration
One project, one goal and numerous interested parties; that calls for intensive collaboration. And that is exactly how we worked. As with any project, VentKlima started by preparing an inventory of the wishes and requirements, so that our engineers and calculators could get to work quickly on preparing a preliminary design. We submitted this to the client for review. After approval, we translated this action plan into a final design and a construction plan for the subcontractors. We also placed the orders. Robé and VentTrade supplied all the ducts, valves and accessories, and we purchased the VAV controllers (Air Concept) and air treatment units (NedAir) externally. All the assembly and installation work for the ventilation systems was in the hands of VentKlima. That is how we worked together to create a sustainable, healthy and comfortable indoor climate on all 23 floors of VERTICAL East in Amsterdam.
